‘Very unexpected’: Researchers discover first new species of dolphin since 1918

A team of scientists based out of Brazil has found a brand new species of dolphin near the Amazon river — the first such discovery since 1918.

“True river dolphins are some of the rarest and most endangered of all vertebrates,” the scientists said in their paper. “We report the discovery of a new species of a river dolphin from the Araguaia River basin of Brazil, the first such discovery in nearly 100 years.”

The scientists noted that the differences between the newly discovered dolphins, found in the Araguaia River basin and the already known Amazon river dolphins could be traced back to a divergence between the Araguaia and the Amazon some 2.08 million years ago.

Because of the location, the researchers have suggested the name “Araguaian boto” for the species. “Boto” being a common regional name for river dolphins.
